I'm sure that other sites will do a better job of reviewing the Droid in-depth, so I will just give some impressions and post a few pictures.

Here are the first pics (note: Jabba is not to scale):

The Droid sitting next to my semi-ancient work-provided BlackBerry:

Likes:

  • Verizon network (I've been a long-time Verizon customer)
  • QWERTY slide-out keyboard
  • Speed and responsiveness of the UI
  • Free apps in the Android Marketplace (such as ConnectBot SSH client and Aldiko ebook reader)
  • Preloaded with Gmail, YouTube, Facebook
  • 5 MegaPixel camera
  • Speakerphone quality is good
  • Connects to my home WiFi
  • Better reception than my old phone

Dislikes:

  • Flash player had trouble with some videos due to version (Zero Punction @ The Escapist).
  • The phone does not always get the orientation right. Sliding out the keyboard usually fixes this.
  • Camera LED flash is better than nothing but indoor pictures are grainier than I hoped.
  • The center of each keyboard key is not the backlit letter itself, but somewhere just to the right of it. I found it hard to type in the dark because I kept trying to put my fingers on the lit-up letters (and thus had many typos).
  • Cost of data plan.

Compared to Apple iPhone:

Not much to say here except that I like the touchscreen of the Droid better than the iPhone... the few times I have tried to type on an iPhone or iPod touch I quickly got frustrated.

Here are pictures taken by the Droid's built-in 5MP camera (All pictures were taken indoor and at night, I would expect things to look a little better in daylight.):

Compare the above picture to a similar shot taken by a real camera with a real flash which I posted in My Reading Place.

Overall I am impressed and happy with the Verizon Motorola Droid.
